Super Bowl 2023: Fans praise Chris Stapleton’s ‘breathtaking’ rendition of national anthem

Fans have praised country singer Chris Stapleton’s “breathtaking” rendition of the US national anthem at the Super Bowl 2023.

Stapleton opened the biggest night in American football, currently underway at the 63,000-capacity State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

He was accompanied by CODA actor Troy Kotsur, who performed the national anthem in sign language at the Super Bowl tonight.

Stapleton’s version of “The Star Spangled Banner” on Sunday (12 February) drew comparisons to Whitney Houston’s impeccable pre-game performance in 1991.

One fan tweeted: “Chris Stapleton might’ve just sang my favorite Super Bowl rendition of the National Anthem (Whitney Houston aside).”

“Grown-a** men crying to Chris Stapleton singing the national anthem,” another said. “Wow, this one is right up there with Whitney Houston’s performance. Just amazing.

In honour of the country’s national anthem, the NFL routinely enlists superstar musicians and performers to deliver the patriotic moment at the annual sporting event.

Singers such as Cher, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, and Marvin Gaye have previously opened the show with their versions of the national anthem.

Reacting to Stapleton’s moving performance on Sunday night, another fan said: “Chris Stapleton needs to sing the National Anthem every year at the #SuperBowl. WOW!”

One person said they were “still mopping up the tears” after the “Starting Over” singer brought the house down with his rousing delivery of the national anthem.

Other performances tonight include Abbott Elementary star Shery Lee Ralph singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” or the Black national anthem.

R&B star Babyface performed “America the Beautiful” and Rihanna will take centre stage as the headline act during this year’s hotly anticipated halftime show.

JAY-Z brought a special guest along to watch the 2023 Super Bowl.

On Sunday, the rapper, 53, attended the year’s biggest football game at State Farm Stadium in Arizona alongside 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter. JAY-Z also shares 5-year-old twins Rumi and Sir with wife Beyoncé.

JAY-Z and Blue Ivy were spotted ahead of kickoff, both sporting all-black outfits featuring graphic T-shirts and sunglasses. Blue Ivy topped off her look with a black hat and nameplate necklace, while JAY-Z accessorized with gleaming white sneakers.

After walking into the stadium, Blue Ivy stopped in the Eagles’ end zone to pose and jump as her dad recorded the moment on his phone.

Last month, Blue Ivy joined her mom when Beyoncé performed at the new Atlantis The Royal Resort in Dubai, following a four-year absence since her last headlining show.

At one point during the set, Blue Ivy and Beyoncé performed a duet of their song “Brown Skin Girl,” from Beyoncé’s 2019 The Lion King companion album.

Dressed in a sparkling red ensemble, Blue Ivy sang her portion of the Grammy Award-winning song, while her mother, wearing a yellow corseted dress with a feathered skirt, sang her own parts.

At the end of the track, Variety reported that Blue Ivy hugged her mom and walked up the stage’s steps, where she then struck a pose and blew kisses to the crowd before her.

“Brown Skin Girl” got a standalone visual treatment on YouTube in August 2020. Blue Ivy received a writing credit for the track, which marked her first official entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Rihanna Is Pregnant with Second Baby, Reveals Bump During Super Bowl 2023 Halftime Show

Rihanna is pregnant with her second baby, PEOPLE has confirmed.

The 34-year-old 2023 Super Bowl Halftime performer took the stage in Phoenix Sunday dressed head-to-toe in bright red, revealing a baby bump, and becoming the first pregnant woman to star in the halftime show.

Rihanna played up the big reveal in the opening moments of her performance, rubbing her stomach and leaving the zipper of her outfit — a jumpsuit layered over a close-fitting bodysuit and sculpted bandeau — down to reveal her belly.

A rep for Rihanna confirmed the news to PEOPLE Sunday night.

The Grammy winner and her beau, rapper A$AP Rocky, welcomed their first child in May 2022.

He was seen excitedly supporting her on the sidelines during the halftime show, filming her performance and dancing along.

Rihanna first revealed in January 2022 that she was expecting her first child with Rocky, 33. After she was photographed debuting her baby bump in New York City, a source told PEOPLE that Rihanna is “excited to be a mom” and “couldn’t be happier.”

“Everything Rihanna does, she does it her own way on her own time table, and having a baby is no different,” the source said, adding that the couple were over the moon about their baby on the way.

“They’re just like any other pair of parents-to-be. Yes, they happen to be famous, but they’re just the cutest, giddiest young couple that’s expecting kids.”

Rihanna opened her highly-anticipated Supr Bowl performance with “B— Better Have My Money” and also performed her hits “Run This Town” and “Umbrella” on Sunday.

Before welcoming their first child, Rihanna told Elle that, as a fan of The Real Housewives franchise, she thinks her parenting style will be similar to that of Real Housewives of New Jersey‘s Teresa Giudice.

“Teresa from Jersey does not play about her kids. She will flatten you about those kids. And that resonates with me a lot because I feel like that’s the type of mom I’m going to be,” Rihanna told the outlet. “Psycho about it.”
