Madonna blames ‘ageism and misogyny’ for judgmental comments about her face at Grammys

Madonna is firing back at comments about her appearance at the Grammy Awards.

The pop icon, 64, and longtime LGBTQ advocate introduced Kim Petras and Sam Smith’s “Unholy” performance at Sunday’s show. It was a groundbreaking night as Petras became the first out transgender woman to win the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance along with Smith, who is nonbinary. However, social media was abuzz over Madonna’s fuller-looking face and speculating about what plastic surgery she’s had.

On Tuesday, the “Vogue” singer, a seven-time Grammy winner, responded to the gossip, saying that once again, she’s “caught in the glare of ageism and misogyny that permeates the world we live in.”

Madonna wrote in an Instagram post that while she originally wanted to give the last award of the night, Album of the Year, she thought it was “more important” to introduce Petras and Smith’s performance, a “history-making moment.” She added, “And on top of that she won a Grammy!!”

“Instead of focusing on what I said in my speech, which was about giving thanks for the fearlessness of artists like Sam and Kim, many people chose to only talk about close-up photos of me taken with a long lens camera by a press photographer that would distort anyone’s face!!,” she wrote.

“Once again I am caught in the glare of ageism and misogyny that permeates the world we live in,” she continued. “A world that refuses to celebrate women past the age of 45 and feels the need to punish her if she continues to be strong willed, hard-working and adventurous.”

The singer said she has “never apologized for any of the creative choices I have made,” nor “the way that I look or dress” and “I’m not going to start” now.

“I’ve been degraded by the media since the beginning of my career but I understand that this is all a test and I am happy to do the trailblazing so that all the women behind me can have an easier time in the years to come,” she wrote.

She borrowed a line from Beyoncé, who also broke records at Sunday’s ceremony, writing, “You won’t break my soul.” Adding, “I look forward to many more years of subversive behavior – pushing boundaries -standing up to the patriarchy – and most of all enjoying my life.” Then she ended with another Bey line: “Bow down bitches!”

Onstage Sunday, Madonna began her intro by saying, “Here’s what I’ve learned after four decades in music. If they call you shocking, scandalous, troublesome, problematic, provocative, or dangerous, you’re definitely onto something.”

She continued, “I’m here to give thanks to all the rebels out there, forging a new path and taking the heat for all of it. All you troublemakers out there, you need to know that your fearlessness does not go unnoticed. You are seen, you are heard and, most of all, you are appreciated.”

She ended with, “So now, speaking of controversy, it gives me great pleasure to introduce two incredibly talented artists who have risen above the noise, the doubt, the critics into something beautifully unholy. Here are two Grammy award winners: Sam Smith and Kim Petras.”

For music’s big night, Madonna was outfitted in a long black skirt with slit, black jacket, white shirt and tie — and she carried a riding crop. Her hair was styled in braids, accentuating her face. Social media was lit up with people making comments speculating about plastic surgery, pointing to exaggerated features and a wrinkle-free forehead. There were jokes about it being a Madonna impersonator, not the star, and the like.

Madonna’s appearance has been a talking point for years, as she’s been a superstar since the ’80s and has been lauded for continuously reinventing herself; she sparked a public dialogue in 2019 about whether she had derriere implants. Despite the chatter about her body, Madonna remains and one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. Last month, she announced her retrospective Madonna: The Celebration Tour, which spans 40 years of her career. Tickets for shows in New York, London and Paris sold out in minutes, with fans buying up 600,000 tickets in one day.

Michael Jackson’s estate moves to sell a piece of his music catalog for nearly $1 billion

In the last year, Sony has been involved in high-dollar purchases regarding the publishing rights and recorded-music catalogs of prominent artists, including the record-making price tag for Bruce Springsteen’s work. Now, the company is looking to pen the largest deal yet for an artist’s catalog, with a $800-900 million dollar offer reportedly made to Michael Jackson’s estate.

Per Variety, Sony’s looking to purchase 50 percent of the estate’s interests in Jackson’s publishing, recorded-music revenues, MJ: The Musical, and the recently announced biopic, Michael. No one close to the deal has verified any details, including Jackson estate representatives, co-executors John Branca and John McClain, Sony, and Primary Wave.

Primary Wave Music reportedly already owns a portion of Jackson’s music catalog, but how much is unknown. The company’s been a frontrunner in the booming music catalog market, owning work from Stevie Nicks, Prince, James Brown, Whitney Houston, Olivia Newton-John, Alice Cooper, and many more.

In the age of streaming, owning the rights to an artist’s songbook has become a commodifying goldmine. Once the catalog is acquired, companies such as Primary Wave seek out as many ways to exploit the artist’s work as possible, getting songs used in films, television, and commercials. Primary Wave also specializes in cultivating “brands” for artists, getting them marketing deals, Broadway shows, Tik Tok campaigns, and any other way to squeeze monetary value into their body of work.

“We’re always working in conjunction with the artist or their estate—we’re creating a marketing plan that they sign off on, and then we go and get,” Primary Wave CEO Larry Mestel tells Variety. “We’ve got 15 digital strategy people who do playlist pitching, website construction, ecommerce development, social media enhancement, we’ve got seven branding people. Our competitors, aside from the majors, are not built to do what we do.”

Owning a piece of Jackson’s catalog would be a huge get for Sony, which held sole ownership over Jackson’s catalog until his death. In spite of a myriad of controversies surrounding the artist prior to and following his death in 2009, Jackson’s catalog (and in particular, “Thriller”) remains among the “most lucrative” in the history of music.

Why The Kardashians Are Reportedly ‘Nervous’ About What’s Going On With Kanye’s Alleged Marriage To Bianca Censori

With all of the controversy that has surrounded Kanye West over the past few months, many were caught off-guard by the news that the disgraced rapper had apparently entered into another marriage, just two months after his divorce from Kim Kardashian was finalized. Fans may not be the only ones who were surprised, however, as the Hulu reality star’s family members are also reportedly confused about what’s going on between Ye and Yeezy architect Bianca Censori. Sources say the Kardashian-Jenner clan have concerns after West allegedly married Censori in an intimate ceremony recently, and apparently there’s one thing in particular that makes them “nervous.”

Kanye West has dated a few women since Kim Kardashian filed for divorce early in 2021, but his decision to tie the knot with Bianca Censori amid his anti-Semitism scandal has The Kardashians stars apparently wondering about his motivations and worried about what it all means for Kimye’s four children. A source told Page Six:

They aren’t sure if it is a PR stunt. They are waiting to see if he files for papers. They are nervous because if it’s real, she would be in the children’s life.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are the parents of North (9), Saint (7), Chicago (5) and Psalm (3), so if the newlyweds were to file for a marriage license — which reportedly has not yet happened — Bianca Censori would, in theory, be involved in their lives. Kardashian and West agreed to joint custody as part of their divorce settlement.

Making that even more complicated are reports that Kim Kardashian “hates” Kanye West’s new wife, and apparently has for years. It doesn’t seem like she and Ye have any kind of agreement in place, either, when it comes to their romantic interests and the kids. Pete Davidson had gotten close enough to them during his nine-month relationship with Kardashian to get their initials tattooed on his neck, and the former SNL comedian even went on solo outings with their son Saint.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s co-parenting situation has been full of drama since their split — with issues ranging from where the kids go to school to North having a TikTok account to Ye not being invited to Chicago’s birthday party — and the SKIMS founder reportedly thinks the marriage could just complicate things further. First, however, the family has to figure out what the situation even is, with the insider saying:

The family isn’t taking this as a marriage yet. They don’t know what it is.

Kanye West was first spotted with the mystery blonde in January 2023 and was seen wearing a wedding ring when he and the Australian jewelry designer met for lunch at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Beverly Hills. Bianca Censori’s sister said news of the wedding was “exciting,” but asked for privacy for their family.

We’ll have to see if Kanye West and Bianca Censori make it legal, and if Kim Kardashian will address it on upcoming seasons of The Kardashians, which is set to return to the 2023 TV schedule with Season 3. The first two seasons can be streamed now with a Hulu subscription.

Avatar: The Way of Water splashes Spider-Man: No Way Home in box office charts as it nears $2bn gross

Avatar: The Way of the Water is passing milestone after milestone on its quest for box office dominance.

As of Wednesday (18 January), the James Cameron sequel has amassed $1.928bn (£1.56bn) globally, overtaking the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.91bn/£1.55bn) as the sixth-highest-grossing film of all time.

Only five films have surpassed the $2bn mark, as Way of the Water looks set to do: Avengers: Infinity War ($2.04bn/£1.65bn), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.069bn/£1.68bn), Titanic ($2.2bn/£1.78bn), Avengers: Endgame ($2.79bn/£2.26bn), and the first Avatar movie ($2.9bn/£2.35bn).

This of course means that if Way of the Water overtakes Infinity War, Cameron will be responsible for three of the five highest-grossing movies of all time.

Cameron has been open about the pressure on the Avatar sequel to be a box office smash as he has three more sequels in the works.

While the director claimed that the film needed to become the fifth highest-grossing film of all time to break even, Variety reported that he was embellishing and that the release would begin to make a profit once it hit an international gross of $1.5bn (£1.264bn).

At the Golden Globe Awards last week, Cameron called for an end to streaming services.

When asked about his films’s financial success, the director told Variety he “doesn’t look at it in those terms”.

Cameron said he is just happy that people want to be back in cinemas, stating: “Enough of the streaming already. I’m tired of sitting on my a**.”

He added: “As a society, we need to go to the cinema.”

Cameron went on to lose the Golden Globe for Best Director to Steven Spielberg, who won for his biographical film The Fabelmans.

Flo Rida wins $82 million lawsuit against energy drink company Celsius

A Florida jury has ruled in favor of a lawsuit brought forth by Rapper Flo Rida — legal name Tramar Dillard — and awarded him a total of $82.6 million in damages.

On Jan. 18, the rapper best known for songs like “Right Round” and “Whistle” won his lawsuit against the brand Celsius energy drinks after a jury found the company guilty of breaching an endorsement deal with the rapper that ran from 2014 to 2018. The jury also found the brand fraudulently hid information from him.

In a statement obtained by NBC News, the rapper thanked the jury and judge involved in the trial as well as his attorneys.

“This was a long journey, but we prevailed. From the start, I only wanted what I worked for, nothing more, nothing less,” he said in his statement. “I was instrumental in the Celsius that you know and love today. When this journey began, no one knew Celsius. I took Celsius all over the world through my videos, concerts, appearances, and social media. I have gained a new respect for the judicial system. God bless America.”

The rapper filed the lawsuit in 2021 and claimed Celsius owed him millions in added stock and royalties under the terms of their deals.

During closing arguments, Flo Rida’s attorney John Uustal said his client had not sought a specific dollar amount in his lawsuit but the 1% ownership he was promised.

In a separate statement obtained by NBC, Uustal said that he and his client relied on the jury to navigate the “complicated legal issues” involved in the case.

“We said we’d trust the jury to do the right thing, we’d trust the verdict, accept the decision of the jury. And it’s amazing how detailed the jury verdict was, how they filled out a complicated and extensive jury verdict in such a way that made it clear beyond any doubt that they understood all the most difficult issues in the case and resolved them,” said the statement. “I’m glad, in this case, the jury concluded that Flo Rida should get what he worked for.”

Met Gala 2023 date, dress code revealed: Dua Lupa, Michaela Coel to co-chair Karl Lagerfeld-themed event

New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is ready to get the full glam treatment in just a few months.

The Met Gala, the annual benefit for the museum’s Costume Institute that gathers fashion and pop culture’s most famous and powerful people, will take place May 1 — following its usual calendar placement on the first Monday in May. The theme, which corresponds with the changing fashion exhibit, will honor late designer Karl Lagerfeld.

Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour announced the 2023 theme during Paris Fashion Week in September. Vogue announced the date, the famous names who will co-chair the annual fundraiser alongside Wintour and the official dress code on Instagram Wednesday.

“Paying tribute to Mr. Lagerfeld is not solely a task for the museum’s curators: the 2023 dress code is ‘In honor of Karl,’” the publication wrote.

Here’s everything to know about the Oscars of fashion.

When is the Met Gala?

The 2023 Met Gala will take place May 1.

Last year’s Met Gala, themed “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” marked a return to the event’s annual schedule for the first Monday in May after the pandemic caused the 2020 gala to be canceled and the 2021 gala to be postponed to September.

What is the 2023 Met Gala theme?

Stars, influencers and fashion figures attending the Met Gala this year will be honoring late designer Karl Lagerfeld.

The German-born couturier worked for decades simultaneously as creative director of many fashion houses including Chanel, Fendi and Chloé in addition to helming his eponymous international fashion label. He died in 2019 at 85.

The Met’s costume institute exhibit will transform to reflect  “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” and will see some 150 of his creations assembled together to see his “stylistic language,” a Met press release says. Lagerfeld’s original sketches will also be on display.

Who will co-chair the Met Gala with Anna Wintour?

The exclusive invite list for the Met Gala is mostly under lock and key until the stars arrive on the red carpet for cameras to see. However, a handful of stars are announced as co-chairs ahead of time.

This year Michaela Coel, Dua LipaPenelope Cruz and Roger Federer will host the extravagant event alongside Wintour.
